Canaan is run by an inter-denominational charitable trust. The centre was officially opened by the entertainer Roy Castle in November 1979 with the support of local Christians and churches.
The trust was called CANAAN - (the land of promise) as we very much sensed that The Lord had responded to the prayers of many before us and had brought the work into being. Since then we have known God's provision and faithfulness over the years as the vision and work has steadily grown, from small beginnings.
The initial vision was for Canaan to be a Christian Bookshop and Counselling Centre, but it was to widen into being a resource centre in serving the churches and local community in various ways and in encouraging and participating in mission here and abroad...
Faith Mission Bookshops stock a large variety of Christian Books, including Theologies, Missionary Biographies, Devotional books, Commentaries and Bibles; as well as large selections of Christian music, both traditional and contemporary. We also stock a good variety of greetings cards and other miscellaneous items...
Our Centre is located in Gitana Street which is almost in the centre of Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent where we have been providing books and other resources to churches and Sunday schools for nearly 70 years. However, we are more than a bookshop and have been described as an oasis in the middle of a busy retail and commercial environment. Our Centre Manager - Julie Ann Ellis - has many years of experience in the retail trade and the selecting and provision of Christian books and other resources. Julie Ann is ably supported by her team at the Centre and behind the scenes. You are most welcome to drop in for a chat and a browse anytime we are open - which is Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm...
The Light is owned by husband and wife team, Keith & Ruth Creighton and is a completely independent faith work reaching out to the local area.
We are not supported by any church or organisation financially but given a lot of prayer and custom support. and are happy to serve churches and Christians of all denominations.
Whilst still living in Gloucester we were led to Stonehouse to open a Christian family store to encourage Christians but also to reach out to the surrounding community and be a Christian presence on the High Street.
After a frustrating 3 year search in the High Street the Lord led us to our shop which we soon realised was built on the site of the former Stonehouse Congregational Church, and we still have some tombs next to the rear car park. Somehow it felt just right to be here so we opened in the depths of the recession and we give all thanks to the Lord for His guidance.
We are blessed with the help of a team of wonderful volunteers and although it has been a steep learning curve and getting steeper we are now half way through our third year and are being blessed with meeting new people every day.
We would also love to meet you in the Store in Stonehouse where we are blessed with a very pushchair/wheelchair friendly shop.
We are also blessed with a FREE car park behind the shop, Free parking on the High Street and only a very small charge in the town car park 2 minutes walk from us.
You will also have an opportunity to visit 90 plus other shops around the High Street with over 90% having easy level access.
MK Christian Books opened on Wednesday 18th March 2015.
Situated just two miles from Wolverton and within easy reach by public transport, the shop is the nearest alternative for former customers of St Andrew's Bookshop, Wolverton, which closed down at the end of February 2015.
